family. It went on like that for a month. Sometimes, he’d find himself smiling and
laughing with them. Something he thought he wouldn’t ever be able to do.
One night, when he set out again, the child that brought him over spotted him.
“Ezzy, what are you doing?” she rubbed her eyes.
“Oh, it’s just you,” Ezekiel flinched. “go back to sleep, March. It’s nothing.”
March smiled. “Is it really nothing? It’s okay if you don’t want to tell. Good night
now, Ezzy.” The girl walked back to her bedroom and slept.
Ezekiel felt guilty for lying to the pure child, but there was nothing he could do,
was there? The night passed on quickly, he started thinking that this was
pointless. That the poster was a lie, as he would always come back
empty-handed.
“Ezzy!! It’s lunchtime!” called March’s mother. He ate with the family and helped
them again, just like any other day. When did this turn into a usual day for him?
While he was lost in thought, March suddenly spoke to him.
“Hey, Ezzy. Are you happy?” she muttered. “I heard the Dark is a cruel place, but
Ezzy is kind-hearted.”
Kind-hearted? He who took advantage of their kindness to seek for gold? Ezekiel
was dumbfounded. Wait. Was there really gold? Memories of the past month
filled his head immediately. He was laughing, smiling. All without feeling like he
was obliged to. The realization dawned on him. Ah, so this was his lost treasure.
“Happy, huh, March? What a fuzzy feeling.” Ezekiel smiled at the girl. It was
genuine. It was warm.
During that same night, he told the whole family about what he was after and
decided he needed to leave.
