weaning in progress: An intermediate category (between weaning success and weaning failure) for patients who are
extubated but continue to receive ventilatory support by noninvasive ventilation (NIV).
weaning success: Absence of ventilatory support 48 hours following extubation.
xanthine bronchodilators: Drugs that produce bronchodilation by inhibiting phosphodiesterase, an enzyme that
inactivates cyclic 3'5' AMP (a substance that promotes bronchodilation). Examples are oral theophylline
                         (Theo-Dur, Slo-bid) and aminophylline, a water-soluble theophylline (Aminophyllin, Somophyllin).
