Concept and Rationale
Professional social work practice in Malaysia is becoming much more relevant in the last few
decades because of rapid urbanization, changes in family structures, diminishing traditional
support network and the increasing number of social problems. The main purpose of social work
is about the enhancement of human well being and the promotion of social justice and social
development. The courses offered by this programme are intended to prepare and equip the
students with knowledge on the interaction between human and society, Students learn theories
and skills in social work to enable them to play their roles effectively in helping or working with
individuals, groups and communities as well as formulating social policies. This programme is
broad-based, drawing on knowledge from other social science disciplines and behavioural
sciences, such as planning, management, and both communication and interpersonal skills.

The programme shall produce graduates who are:
i. Competent and knowledgeable in the social work practice locally, nationally and
internationally,
ii. Able to comprehend and perform tasks comprehensively related to social issues, policies
and services by applying numerical, digital and graphical skills and analysis throughout
the intervention process,
iii. Proficient in communicating effectively by applying social work values and ethics with
clients and other communities in the field of social work either as a team player or as a
leader, and
iv. Capable to demonstrate entrepreneurship skills and recognise the need of life-long
learning for successful career advancement.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon graduating from this program, the students are able to:
i. Integrate advance and comprehensive knowledge, values and skills in social work
practice,
ii. Internalise core social work ethics and act professionally with special emphasis on social
justice, equality and human rights,
iii. Assess unpredictable issues critically and analytically in a creative and innovative way,
iv. Perform a range of interventions including assessing, planning, monitoring,
implementing, evaluating and supervising in social work practice,
v. Work in partnership in various client groups, communities, between and within agencies
locally and internationally,
vi. Demonstrate using appropriate techniques and various presentations, confidently and
accurately in a well-structured manner to diverse audiences,
vii. Utilise a broad range of information and technology applications to enhance social work
intervention,
viii. Develop knowledge and apply numerical and graphical / visual data for current and
future career advancement,
ix. Demonstrate leadership traits and qualities in the process of decision making within
broader parameters,
x. Engage in critical reflection of various topic areas to ongoing development of
professional competency, and
xi. Undertake entrepreneur skills in selected fields at local, national and international level.
