CHAPTER 5:
PROBLEM SOLVING METHOD
INTRODUCTION
Problem solving is the fundamental to the total quality. This chapter focuses on the problem
solving method. The chapter explain the 7 phase in implementing problem solving method
that are identify the opportunity, analyse the current process, develop the optimal solution,
implement changes, study the results, standardize the solution, and plan for the future.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this chapter, student should be able to :
1. learn how to solve problems effectively and positively.
2. Have knowledge on how to make decisions.
3. Exposed the method to solve problems systematically that promote quality.
5.1 STEPS IN PROBLEM SOLVING
Process improvement achieves the greatest results when it operates within the
framework of the problem solving method. In the initial stages of a program, quick
results are frequently obtained because the solutions are obvious or an individual has
a brilliant idea. However, in the long term, a systematic approach will yield the
greatest benefits.
The problem solving method is also called the scientific method has many variations
depending to some extent, on the use; however they are similar. As shown in Figure
5.1, the problem solving method has seven phases and its relationship with the
PDSA cycle. The phases are integrated because each phase is dependent upon
previous phase. Continuous process improvement is the objective, and these phases
are the framework to achieve that objective.
