72 BACK ROADS IRELAND
Viking Country
The large county of Waterford in southeast Ireland has fine stretches of
coastline, gently indented with small coves, the big strand and holiday
resort of Tramore, the beautiful Copper Coast beyond, and the stirring
seascapes of Helvick Head. At the eastern end of the county is Waterford
City, founded by the Vikings in the 10th century. Inland are the pretty
towns of Lismore and Cappoquin in the languid Blackwater Valley. Two
wild mountain ranges stretch north to the borders of Tipperary – the
Knockmealdown Mountains, with their dramatic high passes,
and the Comeragh Mountains, accessed along the
beautiful Nire Valley Drive.
