GIANT KELP
This enormous seaweed can grow at a rate of 20 in (50 cm) per
day in favorable conditions, such as the relatively cold water off
California (shown here). Air bladders help keep the kelp’s blades
afloat as they grow upward toward the surface, where there is
an enhanced supply of light and nutrients.
