GREEN SAND BEACH
Papakolea or Mahana Beach, on the volcanic Big Island of Hawaii,
is one of only a handful of beaches in the world composed of
predominantly green-colored sand. The distinctive hue comes
from the mineral olivine, eroded from rocks in the volcanic
cinder cone that partly encircles the beach.
