2.6.2 Jute fibre
Jute is produced from plants of the Genus Corchorus, which comprises of about
100 species. It can be classified under the bast fibre category and composed primarily
of the plant materials cellulose and lignin. Jute plants and fibres are normally used to
make gunny cloth. The main source of jute in the world is the Bengal Delta Plain in
the Ganges Delta, most of which is occupied by Bangladesh. Figures 2.10(a) and
2.10(b) present the images of jute plant and jute fibre, respectively. Jute fibres have
specific properties, less abrasive during processing, less harmful, lower density in
comparison with almost of synthetic fibres and has a good dimension stability [51].
