Next, we will talk about the scholarship program.
We discussed endowments last month and how they fund the scholarships. Because of the
generosity of many people or groups, the ESA Foundation is able to many scholarships to
deserving students across the country as well as internationally.
Once the scholarship reaches full endowment and has enough money available thru the
endowment policy to award scholarships, a list is compiled of all scholarships to be available for
the next scholarship period. This list is compiled and uploaded to the scholarship website and
the scholarship period opens around the 1 of October each year. Students are then able to
st
create an account on the website and choose the scholarships that best fit their needs. On
February 1 of each year the application period closes.
While students are completing applications and choosing scholarships, the Scholarship Chair is
creating a pool of ESA / ESAF members to complete a first review of the applications. As well as
a pool of non-ESA / ESAF persons to complete the judging of all applications.
After the scholarship application period closes, applications are divided among the Scholarship
Coordinators for the first review and then applications are divided among the judges who
choose the winners of each scholarship.
The scholarship chairman then notifies each winner to confirm the school they will be attending.
This list is sent to HQ where the scholarship checks are written. The scholarship chairman then
sends the scholarship check with a letter to each student’s school. All non-winner applicants are
also notified of their status.
This is pretty much a year long process. The final steps in a scholarship processes are completed
around the same time as the new endowment levels are assessed for the new cycle so it is a
constant revolution.
I would like to thank all the people past, present, & future who have assisted with the scholarship
process. In getting ‘the word’ out to students, as well as in the review / judging process. And a
great big thanks to the support from the HQ staff who assist us thru this process.
We are always looking for ESA / ESAF member who would like to be Coordinators / reviewers and
non-ESA /ESAF persons who might be willing to be a judge. As you can see it takes a village to
make our scholarship process a reality!!!!
Please let us know if you are interested is helping out or want to talk about how to create a
scholarship or help with one already in the process. We are always here for any questions you
have.
