Steering Systems

IMPORTANT: All current production Quicksilver RideGuide steering cables have a self‑locking coupler nut and do not
require an external locking device. If using another brand of cable that does not have a self‑locking coupler nut, an external
                  locking device must be used.

            Quicksilver Cable Measurement

In the following measuring procedure, the calculated cable length is rounded off to the nearest one foot increment. As a result,
this gives an approximate length only. Variations in cable routing, freeboard drop, and cable radii may require adjusting this
measurement. Measurement procedure provides for the minimum 200 mm (8 in.) cable bend radius. Using larger radius bends
would reduce the cable requirements (and may provide easier steering). On boats with considerable freeboard drop or unusual
cable routing, it may be necessary to add cable length.
               1. Add dimensions (a), (b), and (c) in mm (inches) as shown below.
NOTE: On dual installations, dimension (b) is measured from the gunwale to the centerline of the engine with the power
                  steering unit.
               2. Subtract 150 mm (6 in.) from this dimension.
               3. Divide by 300 mm (12 in.). Round up to the nearest foot.
               4. This is the length in feet for ordering. Order cable with the same suffix number as measurement.
               Example: If measurement obtained is 4.72 m (15 ft 6 in.) ‑ round measurement to 4.9 m (16 ft).

a - Distance from center of rack or head to gunwale
b - Distance from center of rack or head to transom
c - Distance from gunwale to centerline of boat
                   a b

                                                              c

            Cable Routing
Correct cable routing is critical for proper steering operation. Be sure to observe the following:
               • Cable must be the correct length for the given boat.
               • Straighten the cable using a whipping motion prior to installation.
               • Route the cable so that it has a minimum 200 mm (8 in.) radius bend.
