ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AMONG STUDENTS IN HIGHER LEARNING
INSTITUTION: METHODS OF CHEATING

ABSTRACT
This paper reported the result of study on academic dishonesty: methods of cheating
among students in one of the polytechnic in Klang Valley. The purpose of this study
is to identify the level of academic dishonesty and also methods of cheating being used
by students either technology cheating or traditional cheating. Data were collected
from 357 respondents. The students answered set of self-administrated questionnaires.
The questionnaires was divided into sections A and B where section A consisted of
demographic profiles of the respondents and section B consisted of all the questions
related to academic dishonesty, traditional cheating and technology cheating. The
findings revealed that 53% from the respondents involved in academic dishonesty.
60% of the students use technology to cheat during their exam while 54% use
traditional way to cheat. This demonstrated that students tend to perform academic
cheating, and preferred technology cheating compared to traditional cheating.
Technology cheating been used widely most probably due to affordable device of
communications, free and easy access to the internet and increasing of technology
literacy among students. Further research could expand the research on the different
background of the respondent, either through other education background, different
level of age and also level of technology literacy.
