Example 2.3:
HPI is a company specializing in home healthcare solutions for Malaysian
consumers. The company wished to study the relationship between absenteeism
and the number of overtime hours worked by employees. Thirty employees were
randomly selected, and numbers of overtime hours were graphed against
numbers of days absent for the previous year is shown in Table 2.2 and Figure
2.9.
Table 2.2 Numbers of Overtime Hours VS Numbers of Days Absent
Employee Hours of Days Absent Employee Hours of Days Absent
Overtime Overtime
1 243 3 16 260 2
2 126 2 17 0 1
3 86 0 18 126 1
4 424 6 19 234 2
5 236 3 20 246 3
6 128 0 21 120 1
7 0 0 22 80 0
8 126 2 23 112 1
9 324 3 24 237 3
10 118 0 25 129 2
11 62 0 26 24 1
12 128 3 27 36 0
13 460 6 28 128 2
14 135 1 29 246 3
15 118 1 30 326 6
Solution:
This analysis showed that there appeared to be a positive relationship between
number of days absent and hours of overtime. Subsequent analysis showed that,
in fact, these variables were significantly related. This led management to
recalculate the actual cost of overtime.
