In the Shadow of a Volcano

Italy’s largest extinct volcano, Monte Amiata, dominates the horizon of much
of southern Tuscany. It has been important in other ways, too. The mountain’s
woods provided lumber for Etruscan ships, its heights were a sanctuary for
medieval monks and its depths give up minerals for the modern age. This
drive takes in a ring of villages around the foot of the volcano, each with its
own culture and appeal. Visitors can enjoy the relaxing properties of ancient
thermal springs, hike up slopes cloaked with rich chestnut and oak forests
– teeming with game and forest fare – enjoy the respite from
