ERUPTION OF A SUBMARINE VOLCANO
Much of the world’s volcanic activity occurs below the ocean
surface. Occasionally, an undersea volcano that has been growing
for millennia reaches the sea surface and produces a dramatic
eruption—as can be seen here, in an event that occurred near
Hunga Ha’apai, Tonga, in the southwest Pacific, in March 2009.
