SURPRISE AMBUSH
             After the first wave of the battle, the British
             21st Lancers charged what they thought
             was a small troop of Mahdist forces—in fact
             it numbered several thousand, most of them
             hidden in a dip in the desert. Thanks to superior
             firepower, British casualties were few.
