3.4.2 Determination of Constituent Weight and Volume Fraction
Weight fraction of the composite laminates was determined through burn-off
test for pure synthetic composite of E-glass/epoxy. However, for hybrid and pure
natural fibres composites, it was done manually by determining the dry weight of the
reinforcements for certain square area and multiply with the number of plies used.
After curing, the weight of hybrid and pure composite laminates were determined
using calibrated weighing balance. The difference between composite weight and the
total dry of fibre weight is the amount of resin used to permeable the fibres. Then,
weight fraction of fibre, and matrix, were determined using Equation 3.1 and
3.2, respectively.
