- Weight of matrix
- Weight of composite laminate
The volume fraction of the composite laminates can be calculated using the prior data
obtained from Equation 3.1 and 3.2. Hence, the volume fraction of pure and hybrid
composites can be determined using Equation 3.3.

3.5 Mechanical Test
Mechanical properties of the composite laminates were characterised through
both the static and dynamic tests. Static tests were conducted on tensile, flexural (three-
point bending) and quasi-static indentation, while the dynamic analysis was performed
via low-velocity impact and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB).
3.5.1 Tensile Test
Tensile test was done according to ASTM D638-10 [125]. The tests were
performed using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), Instron Model 5969 with a load
cell of 10 kN at a cross-head speed of 2 mm/min. Specimens were cut into a dumbbell
shape (Type I) by using a 2-axis milling machine, Rolland MDX-40A at adjustable
parameters including speed rate, depth of cut and feed rate as shown in Figure 3.5.
