Permitam-me, pois, terminar citando de Victor Hugo, a propósito da abolição da pena de
                           morte em Portugal:

«A pena de morte foi abolida no nobre Portugal, pequeno país com uma grande história
(…) Eu dirijo pois as minhas felicitações à vossa nação. Portugal constitui um exemplo
                               para a Europa.»

Indeed, the most important human right is the right to life. If this right cannot be
                           guaranteed, all others are worthless.
Having the courage and capacity to ensure the right to life as a fundamental right for
each individual, even for those who have committed serious crimes, might be the key to
changing the mentalities that lead to war, terrorism and violence.
Allow me to finish by quoting Victor Hugo regarding the abolition of the death penalty
                           in Portugal:

“The death penalty has een aolished in that nole Portugal, sall country with a great his
tory (…) I send y congratulations to your nation. Portugal sets the exaple to Europe.” (…)
