KNX ADVANCED COURSE

                  1 Preface

The changed social and political requirements with regard to environmental protection
have shifted the attention on energy consumption and energy efficiency.
In light of this, the significance of building automation has increased and in this way it
                  spreads into new application fields.

In order to increase awareness amongst end customers, consumption can be displayed,
similar to what is familiar from the dashboard of a car. On the basis of the data and
information shown, the end customer can determine whether energy consumption is
higher or whether for instance the same consumption level within a same time frame is
reached. In a building, one can realize follow-up activities, resulting in changed user
behaviour or in load management. Unnecessary functions or loads are for instance
switched off, if a predefined value is reached.
In order to use this extended new range of features, additional devices are needed in a
KNX installation, called “Smart Meters”. How such components are integrated will be
                  explained later in this chapter.

                  2 Definitions

                  2.1 Smart Meter

The term „Smart Meter” covers digital meters, which digitally collect consumption data,
and - where required - also store and transfer this data.
These include e.g. the new electronic household meters, which replace the black Ferraris
meters used until now. These can however also include diaphragm gas meters with a
digital connexion or even meters for other media like heat or water.

                  2.2 Smart Metering

This term stands for the digital measurement data of the Smart Meter, regardless of the
type of medium that is measured. Smart metering data is billing-relevant data that is
collected and transferred to the metering operators for billing purposes.

                  2.3 Submetering

This term refers to the billing of loads, regardless of the medium that is measured. The
requirements on smart meter or the equipment are not comparable to those of the main
meter of the energy supplier. For the realisation of submetering, calibrated but also non-
                  calibrated meters can be used.
