                  3 Smart Metering

According to European and national legislation, energy suppliers are since 2011 obliged
to offer smart meters and variable tariffs. These tariffs are load- and/or time-dependent, in
this way providing an incentive to save energy. Currently the most promising system is
based on a proposal in the standardisation body of the German OMS group (Open
Metering Specifications), in which KNX is also represented as a founding member and
where it also plays an active role.
The specifications put great emphasis on an open interoperable system, in which the
smart meters of various manufacturers can communicate with one another – just like in
KNX. Another major difference compared to other proposals is the integration of other
media like electricity, gas, water, heat as part of a comprehensive system.
