2.4 Smart Grid
This term refers to the digital or „intelligent distribution grid”. This grid changes from a
static into a dynamic grid. In the past, energy was always generated centrally at a number
of locations in power plants. This situation is changing because new decentralized energy
suppliers have been introduced, e.g. photovoltaic installations, combined heat and power
systems or the like. In order to guarantee the future energy supply and in order to pave
the way for smart metering, a controllable distribution network is required. This in order to
- if needed - switch on or switch off producers acting at the same time as consumers
(“prosumers”) in so-called virtual power plants in order to control the energy flow.
