mica with a density of about 1.5 – 2.0 mg/cm2. Make
the mica thicker just above the threshold used for α
makes the ion chamber suitable for detection of β only.

Figure 6.7 shows two types of α and β detector
where there are many holes as a window made on the
detector case. This window allow the α and β to enter
into the ion chamber inside the steel case. The detec-
tor on the left is used for body and while on the right is
for the foot.
The example of α particle is americium-241. This
is a man made radionuclie for usage as a detector in
smoke detector. Personal working in the factory pro-
ducing the smoke detector will deal with α particle.
Should be remembered that, event though the energy
of α particle is small, but damage into living cell is large
